The Physics of the Problem

A baby grand weighs 500–650 pounds; a concert grand can pass 1,200. That mass rides on three elegant legs never engineered for lateral force, wrapped around a cast-iron plate holding roughly 20 tons of string tension, inside a cabinet whose finish records every careless touch. Uprights concentrate their weight high, making them eager to tip. The physics is unforgiving: pianos punish improvisation with crushed hands, gouged floors, and instruments damaged beyond economic repair. Every professional practice below exists because someone once learned it the hard way.

Equipment: The Non-Negotiables

Professional piano moving is built around the piano board (skid) — a padded plank the instrument is strapped to after partial disassembly — plus heavy dollies, locking straps, and stair-climbing gear where the route demands it. Grands are never rolled on their own casters beyond a few gentle feet; those casters are decorative history. Blanket-wrapping a grand and pushing it through a doorway on its legs is the single most common cause of catastrophic piano damage in amateur moves.

Disassembly: How Grands Travel

A grand piano moves on its side. The lid is locked or removed, the lyre (pedal assembly) comes off, the music desk is removed, and then — the moment demanding real skill — the instrument is tipped onto the piano board on its straight side and the legs removed one by one. Every component is padded and wrapped separately, hardware bagged and labeled. At the destination the sequence reverses, ending with leg reattachment and a careful stand-up. Uprights stay vertical on a board; their risk concentrates in stairs and tight turns rather than disassembly.

Stairs, Turns, and Impossible Rooms

Route planning happens before lifting, not during. Doorway widths, stair dimensions, landing turns, banister clearance, and floor load paths get measured; the crew size follows the route's demands. Some rooms genuinely cannot pass a grand — second-floor installations up switchback stairs sometimes came in by crane before the windows were finished — and professionals identify these cases in advance, arranging hoisting or window access rather than discovering the impossibility mid-carry.

Climate: The Soundboard's Quiet Enemy

The soundboard is a thin spruce diaphragm that lives and dies by humidity. Florida's swing from air-conditioned interiors to saturated summer air — or a move to a heated northern house at 20% winter humidity — moves the board measurably, shifting pitch and, in hard cases, opening cracks. Transport should minimize climate exposure; storage must be climate-controlled without exception; and at the destination, the instrument needs weeks to acclimate before it will hold a tuning. Room placement matters too: away from supply vents, direct sun, and exterior doors.

After the Move: Tuning and Patience

Expect a piano to be out of tune after any move — not from rough handling but from settling and climate change. The professional recommendation is patient: let the instrument acclimate two to four weeks in its new room, then schedule tuning; very fine instruments or big climate transitions may warrant a second tuning a few months later. If the move included disassembly, a technician's once-over of the action and pedals at first tuning is cheap assurance that everything reassembled true.
